Class 25 Action

Aberystwyth Trains June/August 1983

I've pulled together photographs for the Aberystwyth trains that ran during this period or provided links to the relevant pages so you get an appreciation for what Summer Saturdays were like for the Rat Roadshow. This link will open the page showing a list of the trains and locomotives that worked to Aberystwyth in 1983.
Saturday 4th June finds 25289 and 25316 (rear) (L) running round the stock off the ex-07.44 Shrewsbury at Aberystwyth. (C and R) sees 25316 and 25289 (far) couple up to the carriages to form the 10.10 departure for Euston.
(L) The classic Summer Saturday Cambrian sight of two pairs of 25s passing at Newtown. Here on the 4th June 25289 and 25316 with the 10.10 Aberystwyth - Euston wait for 25211 and 25202 to arrive with the 07.35 Euston - Aberystwyth.
(R) The same day the third train to Aberystwyth, the 10.10 ex-Euston, is headed by 25305 and 25194.

On the 2nd July the 07.44 Shrewsbury - Aberystwyth ground to a halt a mile or two outside of Aberystwyth with 25211 and 25154. Whilst the train got going again the latter locomotive was declared a failure and dumped at Aberystwyth (L and C). These photographs are taken looking towards the buildings and sidings that are now occupied by a supermarket. 25211 returned alone on the 10.10 Aberystwyth departure and with load nine achieved 15mph at Talerddig summit. Because of the delay we bailed at Caersws, rather than Newtown, for the 07.35 Euston, (R) headed by 25327 and 25289 (rear) and were right to do so as that train had drawn forward to the signal box at Newtown to exchange tokens.

The following Saturday (9 July) had (L) 25327 at the front of the 07.44 Shrewsbury - Aberystwyth whilst 25201 looks on from the siding. (R) 25083 had become a regular visitor to the line in '83, having worked three ADEXs there, so when it turned up on the 6th August with a scheduled train it was given a 'nameplate' in recognition of its popularity!

On the 16 July L) Class 25 locomotives 25320 and 25298 wait to leave Shrewsbury with the 07.44hrs to Aberystwyth.  C) The train was subsequently delayed at Welshpool waiting for an incoming service due to fhe severe delays caused by track repairs. (R) The late running train has to be terminated at Machynlleth and the locos run round the train to form what will be the 10.45 Machynlleth - Euston (rather than 10.10 Aberystwyth) with 25298 as the leading engine.

On the 28th July class 25 locomotives 25199 and 25083 headed the 0744 Derby - Aberystwyth ADEX and (R) are seen on arrival at Aberystwyth. (C) The locos detach from the train and led by 25083 run round ready for the return whilst (R) 25083 at the head of the 17.56 Aberystwyth - Derby return excursion train is seen here at Newtown where the train is held waiting for an incoming service.

For chronology click here for the 'debacle' of the 30th July.

The 6th August sees (L) 25288 with the 10.10 ex-Aberystwyth waiting for 25196 and 25235 to arrive at Newtown with the 0745 ex-Euston whilst (C) 25032 and 25083 (rear) worked the 'other' 10.10 ex-Euston and are seen here preparing to leave Aberystwyth with the 17.15 Aberystwyth - Shrewsbury.

(R) On the 13th August the 'infamous' 25229 failed again (see 30th July). Machynlleth's fitter battered it back into action and here it is seen rejoining the 10.10 ex-Aberystwyth, only for it to fail again just before Talerddig. However the train managed to get over the top with a minimum speed of 14 mph.

One week later, 20th August, (Top) 25221 (front) and 25175 head the 10.10 departure for Euston at Aberystwyth. (Bottom) 25234 and 25229 (rear) arrive at Machynlleth with the 1010 Euston - Aberystwyth passing the stock of the 14.00 Aberystwyth - Shrewsbury.
