25303 and 25080 (failed) head the "Skirl of the Pipes 1" railtour, seen here at Lostock Hall Junction prior to being replaced by 86315 for the journey back to Birmingham. The locos had taken over the returning Wick - Plymouth train at Carlisle and within a couple of miles 25080 had failed. The train had been two hours late when the 25s were attached and the failure of '080 meant the train was now running over three hours late when this photograph was taken. Passengers had witnessed the remaining loco climbing Ais Gill at 20 mph and the sound of it thrashing itself into the ground a couple of hours just to keep the train moving. I found this to be quite a moving experience and it was one of those events that focussed my future attention onto this loco class. |
